The thyroid gland controls the speed of nearly every system in your body. When it slows down or speeds up, the symptoms are vague and easy to blame on stress, age or diet.
Warning signs worth a TSH test
- Unexplained fatigue, even after a full night of sleep
- Weight gain of several kilograms without changes in diet
- Dry skin, hair fall, brittle nails
- Feeling cold when others feel fine
- Irregular periods or difficulty getting pregnant
If two or more of these sound familiar, a simple TSH blood test is the fastest way to check. It is inexpensive, needs no special preparation, and is one of the most common tests we order at Padithem Health Care.
What the result means
A high TSH means your thyroid is underactive — hypothyroidism — and the standard treatment is a daily, well-tolerated tablet called levothyroxine. A low TSH usually means an overactive thyroid, which needs further investigation. In both cases, dosage is individual: the right dose is the one that brings your TSH back into your personal target range, checked every 6–12 weeks initially.
The good news
Thyroid conditions are among the most manageable chronic disorders. Most patients feel noticeably better within a few weeks of starting the correct dose. The key is testing early rather than living with symptoms for years.
