A single morning blood sugar reading tells you very little. What really matters is your HbA1c — the three-month average that reflects how well your body has handled sugar over time.
The targets we use
- HbA1c below 7% — the general goal for most adults with diabetes
- Fasting sugar 80–130 mg/dL — morning baseline
- Post-meal sugar below 180 mg/dL — two hours after food
These are starting points. Targets are personalised for age, pregnancy, and heart or kidney disease — older patients often aim slightly higher to avoid dangerous lows.
How to actually improve your numbers
Crash diets fail because they are not sustainable. Instead, focus on the habits that clinical evidence supports:
- Eat protein and vegetables first, carbs last — it blunts the blood sugar spike
- Walk for 10 minutes after meals — muscles soak up glucose without needing insulin
- Take medicines at the same time daily; a phone alarm beats memory
- Check your feet daily and get an annual eye check
Managing diabetes is not about perfection. It is about consistent, small improvements. At Padithem Health Care, our diabetes management programme combines medication review, diet counselling and regular monitoring — so your HbA1c trend goes in the right direction.
